San José State Spartans Fall in MWC Tournament Semifinals

This magic carpet ride for the San Jose State Spartans (20-13) has come to an end in Las Vegas, as the No. 20 San Diego State Aztecs (26-6) have advanced to the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship.

Perhaps the Shakespearean drama will have one more chapter to be written for SJSU.

San Diego State 64, San José State 49.

SJSU didn’t have many answers for the Aztecs stifling defense, as the Spartans made just 19-for-55 (34.5%) from the field, 5-for-19 (26.3%) from 3-point range and 6-for-10 (60%) at the free throw line. San Diego State also forced SJSU into committing 13 turnovers.

Omari Moore, who came alive in the second half yesterday, struggled to get going offensively all night, finishing with seven points on 3-for-13 from the field and 1-for-4 from 3-point range. Moore also had three turnovers.

To me it felt like Moore was trying to force the issue and got flustered.

Sophomore Tibet Gorener was the only Spartan to finish in double-figures, finishing with 15 points on 5-for-10 from the field.

SJSU tried to make a couple runs to get the game back to single digits, but the Aztecs had an answer for nearly everything.

It was a tall task for SJSU against such a quality opponent, but just didn’t have the firepower to overcome the turnovers & poor offensive first half.

I really hope that SJSU gets a bid in one of the postseason tournaments, because this has been a remarkable turnaround in year two under Tim Miles.

Up Next:

We’ll have to wait until Sunday to see if the Spartans will be dancing in the NIT or CBI tournaments.
