According to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Milwaukee Bucks plan to hire Adrian Griffin as the franchise’s next head coach. Griffin will be the 17th head coach in franchise history.

Milwaukee narrowed their coaching search down to three candidates: Nick Nurse, Kenny Atkinson, & Griffin.
Nick Nurse pulled out of the process, which makes me think he’s getting the Phoenix Suns head coaching vacancy, leaving it up to Atkinson & Griffin.
Maybe Nurse didn’t want the optics of losing the job to one of his assistants? That’s pure speculation on my part.
Griffin began his coaching career with the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach from 2008-10 under Scott Skiles. He then went to be an assistant in Chicago from 2010-2015, then to the Orlando Magic for the 2015-16 season, then to Oklahoma City from 2016-2018, before going to Toronto as an assistant from 2018-2023.
This is Griffin’s first head coaching gig in the NBA.
I’ll give him a shot of course, but I’m extremely skeptical about a first year head coach with this team. We’ll see how it goes. (Insert “ugh” emoji).
For me, the biggest piece of the puzzle that’ll be interesting to see is what assistant coaches Griffin brings in.
At the end of the day, it’s impossible to know, unless you were in the room, what went down in those interviews. I just hope it was a healthy mix of an impressive meeting with the organization & player input, which I have to assume it was rather than one player picking the coach.
We have no idea at the moment of what Griffin will look like as a head coach. I’m interested to see what ideas & structure he brings in. Knee jerk reaction to be skeptical of a first time head coach with a roster full of vets, but as I mentioned earlier, I’ll give him a shot.
