Saturday’s game was a classic Wisconsin/Iowa game right down to the Badgers losing.
I find myself still a bit detached this year since the firing of Paul Chryst last October, so the losses aren’t hitting as hard for me than usual. But the losses make the wins all the more wonderful.
Saturday was not a good day for the Badgers. Last time they played this poorly at home, they had an interim head coach by Monday.
Wisconsin will take some heat for a pitiful offensive performance, as well as they should. But Iowa had a first-time starter Quarterback, former Badger Deacon Hill, that it barely trusted to throw a forward pass, Wisconsin knew it & Iowa still rushed for 200 yards.
Starting Quarterback Tanner Mordecai injured his throwing hand in the first half & didn’t return to the game. It sounds like he’ll be out of commission for a few weeks.
Freshman Braedyn Locke came in in relief of Mordecai. Locke’s stats weren’t great, he finished 15-for-30 for 122 yards & an interception. But he did some nice things. I think this game experience with Mordecai out that he’ll get will be very valuable in the long run.
Luke Fickell & Phil Longo are trying to change the offense & doing it with Chryst’s & Leonhard’s players, many of whom aren’t good fits. It’s hard to make long-term judgments until they get their own guys. But those of us who watched Don Morton & Gary Andersen have every right to be skeptical.
The Badgers play the Bret Bielema led Illinois Fighting Illini next Saturday, October 21st, in Champaign. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. (Central Time) & televised on FS1.
