I decided to take a dive into the Division 1 College Baseball coaching carousel so far this offseason.

Alcorn State:

Former Coach: Reggie Williams

Incoming Coach: Open

What to know: Alcorn State relieved Reggie Williams of his duties after three seasons, where he compiled a 16-122 record. Alcorn State is one of the toughest jobs in the SWAC.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff:

Former Coach: Carlos James

Incoming Coach: Logan Stout

What to know: Carlos James is out as the Arkansas-Pine Bluff head coach after 14 seasons where he went 212-414-2. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is another tough job in the SWAC. Intriguing hire in Logan Stout.

Arkansas State:

Former Coach: Tommy Raffo

Incoming Coach: Mike Silva

What to know: Arkansas State fired Tommy Raffo after 16 seasons as head coach. Raffo is the winningest coach in program history, but never led the Red Wolves to the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas State hired Mike Silva away from Nicholls State where he spent the past three seasons as head coach, leading the Colonels to the NCAA Tournament in the last two years, ending the program’s Regionals drought, which dated back to 1998.

Cal State Bakersfield:

Former Coach: Jeremy Beard

Incoming Coach: Jordon Banfield

What to know: Cal State Bakersfield fired Beard after eight years with the program as head coach where he went 153-233 with the Roadrunners. Jordon Banfield was hired away from Oakland, where he led the Golden Grizzlies for four seasons & a 109-114 record in his tenure.

Campbell:

Former Coach: Justin Haire

Incoming Coach: Chris Marx

What to know: Justin Haire was hired away by Ohio State after 17 seasons with Campbell, the past 10 seasons as head coach. Haire led Campbell to the NCAA Tournament in five straight seasons from 2018-2023. Campbell hired Chris Marx, who was the pitching coach at Purdue for the past five seasons.

Charleston Southern:

Former Coach: Marc MacMillan

Incoming Coach: Karl Kuhn

What to know: Mar MacMillan was fired as head coach after four seasons where he went 86-116. Charleston Southern has not had a winning season since 2014. Karl Kuhn was promoted to head coach after serving as the pitching coach on MacMillan’s staff this past season. Kuhn previously was the head coach at Radford from 2020-22, going 47-64.

The Citadel:

Former Coach: Tony Skole

Incoming Coach: Russell Triplett

What to know: The Citadel fired Tony Skole after seven seasons as head coach, where he went 123-316 at his alma mater. They decided to hire Russell Triplett, who spent the last 14 seasons as the head coach of Division 2 Newberry College (South Carolina), where he went 418-278-1.

Coastal Carolina:

Former Coach: Gary Gilmore

Incoming Coach: Kevin Schnall

What to know: Gary Gilmore retired after 29 seasons at the helm of his alma mater and more than 1,300 wins. They hired Kevin Schnall who was an assistant coach under Gilmore for 21 seasons.

Dayton:

Former Coach: Jayson King

Incoming Coach: Scott Loiseau

What to know: Jayson King stepped down as Dayton’s head coach after seven season, where he went 165-165-1 in his tenure, to join Vanderbilt’s staff as an assistant coach. Dayton hired Scott Loiseau, who spent the 2024 season as the associate head coach at Penn State. Loiseau spent the previous 14 seasons as the head coach of Division 2 Southern New Hampshire Penmen and went 480-209-2.

Delaware State:

Former Coach: JP Blandin

Incoming Coach: Open

What to know: JP Blandin retired after 23 years as head coach. He led the Hornets to more than 500 wins in his tenure.

Eastern Kentucky:

Former Coach: Chris Prothro

Incoming Coach: Walt Jones

What to know: Chris Prothro went on a medical leave of absence in March. Walt Jones was named acting head coach in his absence. In May, Eastern Kentucky announced that Prothro wouldn’t return from his leave and Jones would be promoted to head coach on a permanent basis.

Houston Christian:

Former Coach: Lance Berkman

Incoming Coach: Clay VanderLaan

What to know: Lance Berkman announced his resignation after three years as the head coach after compiling a 47-105 record in his tenure. Clay VanderLaan was promoted to head coach after three seasons on the staff under Berkman. VanderLaan was previously the head coach for three years at Division 3 St. Thomas (Houston, Texas).

Indiana State:

Former Coach: Mitch Hannahs

Incoming Coach: Tracy Archuleta

What to know: Mitch Hannahs left to take over South Florida after spending 11 years as the head coach at his alma mater. Indiana State then hired Tracy Archuleta away from Southern Indiana where he spent the past 18 years as the head coach.

Liberty:

Former Coach: Scott Jackson

Incoming Coach: Bradley LeCroy

What to know: Scott Jackson stepped down after eight seasons at Liberty where he went 246-181. Bradley LeCroy was hired after two seasons as the head coach of VCU.

Long Beach State:

Former Coach: Bryan Peters

Incoming Coach: TJ Bruce

What to know: Bryan Peters was named the head coach for the 2024 season on an interim basis in the summer of 2023 after Eric Valenzuela left to become the head coach at Saint Mary’s. Long Beach State decided to go into a different direction this offseason and hired TJ Bruce. Bruce was most recently the associate head coach at TCU for two seasons. Bruce was previously the head coach at Nevada for seven seasons, leading the Wolfpack to a 171-168 record.

Longwood:

Former Coach: Chad Oxendine

Incoming Coach: Ray Noe

What to know: Chad Oxendine left to return to Coastal Carolina to become the associate head coach there. In three seasons as Coastal Carolina head coach, he went 66-93. Ray Noe was hired from VMI.

Manhattan:

Former Coach: Dave Miller

Incoming Coach: Steven Rosen

What to know: Dave Miller stepped down after two seasons as head coach where he led the Jaspers to a 44-64 record. Steven Rosen was promoted as the interim head coach.

Minnesota:

Former Coach: John Anderson

Incoming Coach: Ty McDevitt

What to know: John Anderson retired after 41 years as head coach and more than 1,300 wins at his alma mater. Anderson is the winningest head coach in Big Ten history. Ty McDevitt was promoted to replace Anderson after spending eight years on the staff. McDevitt is just 31 years old, making him the youngest head coach in a Power Four conference.

Missouri State:

Former Coach: Keith Guttin

Incoming Coach: Joey Hawkins

What to know: Keith Guttin retired after 42 seasons and more than 1,300 wins at his alma mater. Joey Hawkins was promoted after spending the past two seasons on the staff.

Niagara:

Former Coach: Rob McCoy

Incoming Coach: Matt Spatafora

What to know: Rob McCoy was hired away by William & Mary after spending the last 16 seasons at Niagara and is the winningest coach in Niagara program history with 299 wins. Niagara is coming off its best season in program history, where they won 38 games and made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. Niagara promoted Matt Spatafora, who has spend the last 12 seasons on the staff as hitting coach and recruiting coordinator.

Nicholls State:

Former Coach: Mike Silva

Incoming Coach: Brent Haring

What to know: Mike Silva took the head coaching job at Arkansas State after three seasons as head coach at Nicholls State where he went 94-71. Nicholls State hired Brent Haring as the successor. Haring spent last season as LSU’s director of operations.

Oakland:

Former Coach: Jordan Banfield

Incoming Coach: Open

What to know: After four seasons as head coach and compiling a 109-114 record, Jordan Banfield took the Cal State Bakersfield vacancy. Oakland has never made the NCAA Tournament as a Division 1 program.

Ohio State:

Former Coach: Bill Mosiello

Incoming Coach: Justin Haire

What to know: Bill Mosiello stepped down as the head coach of Ohio State after just two seasons, where he went 60-51. Justin Haire was hired from Campbell.

Pacific:

Former Coach: Chris Rodriguez

Incoming Coach: Reed Peters

What to know: Pacific fired Chris Rodriguez after five seasons as head coach, where the program went 66-164. The Tigers hired Reed Peters as head coach, who spent the past 17 seasons as the head coach at San Joaquin Delta community college. Pacific has not had a winning season since 2010.

Pepperdine:

Former Coach: Rick Hirtensteiner

Incoming Coach: Tyler LaTorre

What to know: After nine seasons as head coach, Rick Hirtensteiner was fired after going 194-226 with the program. The Waves hired Tyler LaTorre as the replacement after two seasons as the head coach of NAIA Westmont.

South Carolina:

Former Coach: Mark Kingston

Incoming Coach: Paul Mainieri

What to know: Mark Kingston was fired after seven seasons as head coach, where the Gamecocks went 217-155 in his tenure. South Carolina hired Paul Mainieri, who has 1,505 career wins as a college head coach, but he’s been out of baseball since he retired from LSU in 2021.

S.C.-Upstate:

Former Coach: Mike McGuire

Incoming Coach: Kane Sweeney

What to know: Mike McGuire took the head coaching job at Winthrop after five seasons as the head coach of S.C.-Upstate where he led the Spartans to a 152-89-1 record. S.C.-Upstate quickly promoted Kane Sweeney as McGuire’s successor. Sweeney has been on the staff for the past five seasons.

South Florida:

Former Coach: Billy Mohl

Incoming Coach: Mitch Hannahs

What to know: South Florida fired Billy Mohl after seven seasons as head coach. Mohl led the Bulls to a 174-181-1 record. South Florida hired Mitch Hannahs away from Indiana State.

Southern Indiana:

Former Coach: Tracy Archuleta

Incoming Coach: Chris Ramirez

What to know: Tracy Archuleta was hired away by Indiana State after 18 seasons as head coach of Southern Indiana, where he’s the winningest coach in program history. The Screaming Eagles hired Chris Ramirez, who had spent the last five years as the head coach at Division 2 Lenoir-Rhyne (North Carolina). Ramirez was previously the head coach at Division 2 Illinois-Springfield for six seasons. Ramirez holds a career record of 351-202-1.

Stephen F. Austin:

Former Coach: Johnny Cardenas

Incoming Coach: Matt Vanderburg

What to know: Johnny Cardenas retired after 16 seasons as head coach at Stephen F. Austin, where he went 293-483. Stephen F. Austin hired Matt Vanderburg, who spent 16 years at Division 2 West Texas A&M, leading them to a 515-293 record.

Texas:

Former Coach: David Pierce

Incoming Coach: Jim Schlossnagle

What to know: David Pierce was fired after eight seasons as head coach, where he led the Longhorns to a 297-162 record. Texas hired Jim Schlossnagle, who has been a head coach for 23 seasons and has a 946-455 career record.

Texas A&M:

Former Coach: Jim Schlossnage

Incoming Coach: Michael Earley

What to know: Jim Schlossnagle left to take the Texas Longhorns job. The Aggies hired Michael Earley, who was the hitting coach under Schlossnage.

Utah Valley:

Former Coach: Eddie Smith

Incoming Coach: Nate Rasmussen

What to know: Eddie Smith left Utah State to take the Washington Huskies head coaching vacancy. Nate Rasmussen was promoted from associate head coach.

VCU:

Former Coach: Bradley LeCroy

Incoming Coach: Open

What to know: Bradley LeCroy left VCU to take the Liberty opening.

Washington:

Former Coach: Jason Kelly

Incoming Coach: Eddie Smith

What to know: Jason Kelly left Washington after just two seasons as head coach where he went 54-51-1. Kelly is now the pitching coach and associate head coach at Texas A&M. Washington hired Eddie Smith from Utah Valley.

West Virginia:

Former Coach: Randy Mazey

Incoming Coach: Steve Sabins

What to know: Randy Mazey retired after 12 seasons at the helm. West Virginia promoted Steve Sabins, who spent nine seasons as an assistant under Mazey.

William & Mary:

Former Coach: Mike McRae

Incoming Coach: Rob McCoy

What to know: William & Mary did not renew Mike McRae’s contract, which ended his three-year run as the Tribe head coach where he led the program to a 90-74 record. William & Mary hired Rob McCoy as the replacement, who spent the last 16 years as Niagara’s head coach.

Winthrop:

Former Coach: Tom Riginos

Incoming Coach: Mike McGuire

What to know: Winthrop did not renew Tom Riginos’ contract. Riginos went 329-348 in 14 years at the helm of the program. Winthrop hired Mike McGuire away from S.C.-Upstate.

Youngstown State:

Former Coach: Dan Bertolini

Incoming Coach: Trevor Charpie

What to know: Dan Bertolini was fired after eight seasons as head coach, where he led the Penguins to a 141-266 record. Youngstown State promoted Trevor Charpie after one season on the staff.
