Kent State University announced the firing of head football coach Kenni Burns today, two weeks after the school placed him on administrative leave amid a university investigation into undisclosed issues.
Kent State did not disclose details on why Burns was terminated.
Burns came to Kent State from Minnesota where he was an assistant coach. Burns went 1-23 (.042) overall and 0-16 in Mid-American Conference play in two seasons, including an 0-12 campaign in 2024. The Golden Flashes did not beat a Football Bowl Subdivision program in his tenure.
Burns posted on X/Twitter:

“At this time, our focus will be to support our student-athletes and provide them with the best opportunity to have a positive and competitive experience,” Kent State Director of Athletics Randale Richmond said in a statement.
Mark Carney, the offensive coordinator, will serve as Interim Head Coach for the 2025 season. This is Carney’s first head coaching gig.
Kent State opens the 2025 season on August 30th against Merrimack, a Football Championship Subdivision program, at Dix Stadium.
