Root and bet against the UW-Milwaukee Panthers baseball team at your own peril!
The Milwaukee Panthers (26-31) – the No. 4 seed in the Auburn Regional – have taken down the regional host and overall No. 4 seeded Auburn Tigers (38-20), 13-8, at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama in front of 6,408 fans.
The Panthers scored their 13 runs on 16 hits. The 13 runs are the most runs scored in a NCAA Tournament game in program history and also the most runs a regional 4-seed has put up against an overall top-4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Milwaukee advances to the winners bracket tomorrow at 7:00 PM (CT) from Plainsman Park and will face the winner of tonight’s NC State/UCF game.
UWM jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the 4th inning before Auburn finally got on the board to make it a 10-3 game headed to the fifth inning.
Milwaukee starter Braden Theis pitched four innings, throwing 68 pitches, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Riley Peterson pitched the final five innings, allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks. I thought Peterson actually pitched pretty well in this game despite giving up the five runs.
Joey Spence has been on a little bit of a terror of late, going 3-for-5 today with an RBI and two runs scored. Grant Ross also went 3-for-5 with an RBI, run scored and a walk.
Get behind this team, folks! This team is fun to watch and you get the feeling that it just means more to them!
This is the second win in the NCAA Tournament in program history for UWM and the first since 1999. The Panthers have now tied the Wisconsin Badgers for most wins in the NCAA Tournament in the state of Wisconsin. The Badgers have an all-time tournament record of 2-2 in their lone appearance in 1950 – I should add that the Badgers haven’t fielded a NCAA Varsity baseball team since 1991. UWM now has an all-time NCAA Tournament record of 2-8.
